Why not a pedestrian bridge instead of a tunnel?
A pedestrian bridge over Georgia Avenue simply isn't feasible.
In August 2006, the Mid-County Regional Services Center asked the County’s Public Works & Transportation staff to perform a quick feasibility study of a bridge over Georgia Ave. at Forest Glen Rd., possibly connecting with the pedestrian bridge over the Beltway ramps.
The result?
"Such a structure is not practical - massive relocation of utilities, length of span needed, impossibility of dropping a bridge pier on Georgia Ave."
