"Thank you for your letter in support of constructing a pedestrian tunnel beneath Georgia Avenue at the intersection of Forest Glen Road. I appreciate knowing your interest in this matter.

I have heard from a number of residents of Forest Estates and other neighborhoods in the vicinity of this intersection, which is one of the most congested in the entire State of Maryland. I made sure that my staff was present at the community forum hosted by WMATA on July 31, which I understand was a lively exchange of views and information on proposed development at the Metro station and related concerns about growth and traffic in the neighborhood.

We need to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists because continued growth in our region has contributed to increased traffic. I will work with state and local officials on comprehensive plans to address growth in the area. A pedestrian tunnel would be a sensible part of such an approach, and I will support joint efforts to fund this project.

Current and proposed development in Forest Glen, Montgomery Hills and downtown Silver Spring makes it essential that long-term studies be conducted to determine the impact of these projects on regional traffic, schools, and the availability of affordable housing. The State Highway Administration, the Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission, the Montgomery County Public School system, and the County Department of Economic Development and Department of Housing and Community Affairs are agencies that need to work together in this regard.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me in this important matter. Please do not hesitate to contact me whenever I may be of service to you.
