"Thank you for your letter dated July 4, 2006, regarding traffic
operations and safety along Georgia Avenue (MD 97) in the vicinity of
the Forest Glen Metro Station. I share your concern when motorists
and pedestrians disregard traffic laws creating hazards not only for
themselves, but for others as well.
These issues fall under the purview of the Department of Police.
Officers at the 3rd District Station of the Montgomery County Police
Department will increase patrol and attention to the illegal left
turns on Georgia Avenue during rush hours. To increase traffic
safety in the area, their Traffic Squad performs regular speed
enforcement on the Georgia Avenue corridor as well as initiates
pedestrian enforcement operations. While "jaywalking" is illegal,
the Police Department takes an approach of education first rather
than enforcement of this violation, though in some cases these
citations are issued.
Georgia Avenue (MD 97) is a State highway owned and maintained by the
Maryland State Highway Administration (MSHA). Therefore, by copy of
this letter, I am forwarding your suggestion for a pedestrian tunnel
to Mr. Darrell Mobley, District Engineer for MSHA District 3, for his
review and follow up. Mr. Mobley can be contacted directly at 301-
513-7300.
Thank you again for taking the time to write and share your concerns
and observations. If you have any questions or would like to discuss
the enforcement issues further, please feel free to contact Sergeant
Tom Harmon, Supervisor of the 3rd District Traffic Squad, at 240-773-
0243." |
