Dr. Dana Beyer, candidate for State Delegate
In favor of tunnel

"Thank you for asking me to share my opinion with the FECA. I have already spent a week meeting the residents of the Forest Glen neighborhood. There is almost a universal desire for this tunnel to be built, and a palpable fear about using the intersection at all as a pedestrian. I'm uncomfortable driving through it myself. As the major intersection adjacent to Holy Cross Hospital, it is all the more imperative that the problem be addressed quickly.
I support the position our current District 18 delegation and will work assiduously as part of the new delegation to get this project to the top of the County's list. As the comments of the current Councilmembers have made clear, there will be no action taken until November. But our new delegation will lobby the Council after the election to get the funds appropriated.
We may have many intersections that need to be upgraded, but this one is the worst -- as you say, a "perfect storm." It will be at the top of my priority list. I am telling the voters that if we want to live in a high quality environment, we have to be willing to pay for it. As Oliver Wendell Holmes said eighty years ago, "Taxes are the price we pay for civilization." We should and will appropriate whatever needs to be spent to pursue this project." |
