Unfortunately, there is no way that the county will have police out at the intersection during all daylight hours every single day.  There is no place for a police car to watch the traffic, without completely backing up traffic even further into Wheaton.

As for crossing guards, you could not pay us $100k a year to do that job.  We would certainly welcome the idea, but if we are not protected, who will protect the crossing guards?
