"Thank you for contacting me regarding the pedestrian safety issues on Georgia Avenue at the Forest Glen Metro. Please be assured that I do take this issue very seriously. I will be sending staff to the July 31st meeting. In addition, last week I requested a briefing on all issues related to this proposal for the Council's Transportation and Environment Committee, which I Chair. I will let you know when that discussion will take place."

(Response written by Mr. Perez's assistant):
"Thank you for taking the time to e-mail.  Councilmember Perez appreciates hearing about your concerns.

We are well aware of the safety concerns at Forest Glen – it is an ongoing problem with ongoing attempts to implement the best combination of solutions.  Currently, the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board is in conversation, of which we are an indirect partner, with the State Highway Administration (SHA) about the possible steps that can be implemented to address the safety issue.  We absolutely agree that measures need to be taken to secure pedestrian and traffic safety, but we are currently not in a position to identify which measures would work best.

We support the Advisory Board’s conversation with SHA and support action by SHA at the earliest possible time.  Our office will continue to do all that we can to make this intersection a safer place for everyone who uses it.

Why are pedestrians at risk? PDF Print E-mail

The intersection of Georgia Avenue and Forest Glen Road is the #1 most congested intersection in Montgomery County. This intersection is a perfect storm of traffic and pedestrians:

  • The Forest Glen Metro station is at this intersection, bringing in pedestrians from local neighborhoods
  • Entrances and exits to the Capital Beltway are just yards from this intersection
  • It is the closest major intersection to Holy Cross Hospital

Despite the top traffic ranking, and the tragic number of car accidents and pedestrian fatalities at this intersection, the Maryland government has not stepped in with a plan to make the area safer.

Instead, Metro plans on building a new housing development at the intersection, greatly increasing the number of cars and pedestrian traffic!

In this election year, help us inform our representatives in the County Council that they cannot sit on their hands any longer. This is an issue that needs a resolution - before more pedestrians lose their lives.
